Live Trading Nights

Live Trading Nights are evenings where business people and individuals come together to swap services and stuff. You can trade physical goods, like random objects in the garage, your old boat, your new sculpture that the wife wants out of the house, anything! You can trade services, both offered from a company or just offered by you personally, like tutoring or baby sitting. Or from your business, like lawn care, website design, tax services, screen printing - anything.

How's it work?

When we first start a Live Trading Night, we spend a few brief minutes explaining the principles of bartering in a live trading environment. We provide "Have and Want Lists" to help you jot down a few ideas of what you might have to offer. You don't have to have physical items or services with you in your possession, though it doesn't hurt to bring a photo or an example!

We start the event with one popular item, and take offers on what you'd be willing to give to get that item. We draw a tree on the whiteboard - for every item that is offered for the first item, we take offers on them. And on those, until we have quite the tree developed. Once we either reach the bottom of the whiteboard, run low on time or run low on interest in a particular item, we move towards wrapping up the event with the actual trades themselves. The person who offered the very first item on the top of the tree gets to pick any item they want, anywhere on the board. This makes a chain reaction of trades, all leading back to the original item. It's a little hard to explain, but very fun to watch! In one "swoosh", 6-10 trades can go through all at the same time. And we do this with every top tier item on the board, until every branch of the tree has been traded away. Still confused? Come to the next event and find out how it works! It's a lot of fun!

One catch: You can't leave early, because the actual trading doesn't take place until the end, when the tree has been built. If you have to leave early, you need to leave someone else in your place who can choose what items you will take in trade for items you have offered. If you know you have to leave early, come and observe, but don't make an offer on the board. It's a commitment, and we can't complete a trade for you without knowing what you want. Well, we could, but goodness knows what you'd do with the 500 pounds of shellfish you might end up with!

Once all trades are complete, each person fills out the provided IOU slips, providing the item name and their contact information to the winning trading partner. After you hand the IOU to someone, it is their responsibility to contact you for fulfillment of the trade. Bartering in Motion gracefully steps out at this point and lets you facilitate the actual trade itself. We strongly suggest that any physical items be swapped within 2 weeks of the Trading Night. Services often take longer. We will also provide blank bartering contracts if needed for any more complex swaps (some services or real property need a bit more than an IOU).
